Overview

What does Industrial Earthing include?

Earthing is one of the most neglected parts of an electrical installation and one of the most consequential. A high-resistance earth path means that in a fault condition, fault current does not flow freely - the protection does not trip, and the equipment frame sits at a dangerous potential. IS 3043 defines the standards for earthing in India: electrode types, installation method, acceptable resistance values and testing. We design, install and test earthing systems for factories, commercial buildings and industrial facilities in Chh. Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad).

  • Equipment earthing - motor frames, panel enclosures, cable armour bonding
  • Structural earthing - building steel framework, equipment foundations
  • Earth continuity conductor sizing and routing
  • Earth-resistance measurement - three-point fall-of-potential method (calibrated earth tester)
  • Existing earthing system assessment and upgrade
  • Earth pit inspection - electrode condition, soil treatment, pit cover check
  • Earth-resistance report with readings at each electrode

Scope of work

What happens during a Industrial Earthing visit?

Specific activities covered in a typical engagement. Scope varies by project - this is a representative list, not a fixed contract.

  • 1

Soil resistance estimation (visual assessment, local experience)

  • 2

Earthing system design - number of electrodes, electrode type, interconnection

  • 3

Earth electrode pit excavation coordination (civil works)

  • 4

Electrode installation, backfilling with appropriate soil treatment

  • 5

GI strip or copper conductor routing from electrodes to panel earth bus

  • 6

Equipment bonding - earth conductor from panel earth bus to each motor frame and equipment

  • 7

Earth continuity check - every bonded equipment must show continuity to earth bus

  • 8

Earth-resistance measurement at every electrode (three-point method, IS 3043)

  • 9

Test report with measured resistance values at each electrode and system earth resistance

  • 10

Process

How does the Industrial Earthing process work?

From inquiry to handover. Steps may vary depending on project size and site-specific conditions.

1

Site assessment

We review the site soil conditions, existing earthing arrangement (if any), and the load profile to determine what type and how many electrodes are needed.

2

Earthing design

Number and type of electrodes, interconnection scheme, earth bus sizing, bonding conductor sizing. For complex sites we prepare a simple earthing layout drawing.

3

Electrode installation

Pit excavation, electrode driving or placing, backfilling with salt and charcoal or bentonite depending on electrode type and soil. Chemical earthing uses a proprietary compound that maintains moisture.

4

Bonding and earth bus

GI flat or copper strip run from each electrode to the panel earth bus. Equipment bonding - a separate conductor from the earth bus to the frame of each motor, panel and metallic equipment.

5

Earth-resistance measurement

Three-point fall-of-potential method using a calibrated earth tester. We measure at each electrode individually and check the combined system resistance. IS 3043 specifies limits; we record actual values.

6

Report and remediation

Earth-resistance report with readings at every electrode. If resistance is above IS 3043 limits, we recommend and implement remediation - additional electrodes, chemical treatment, better backfill.

Standards

Indian Standards we align with

Our work for this service is aligned with the following Indian Standards and statutory regulations.

  • IS 3043:2018 - Code of practice for earthing (the primary reference)
  • IS 732:2019 - Wiring installations (earth conductor sizing)
  • IS 5216 - Safety procedures
  • IE Rules 1956 - Earthing requirements for LT installations
  • IE Rules 1956 Rule 61 - Earthing at every installation
Why Shaats

What differentiates us

Honest differentiators - what we actually do differently.

  • We use a calibrated three-point earth tester - not the simple two-probe test that can give falsely optimistic readings.
  • We measure each electrode separately and the combined system - you know exactly which electrodes are performing and which are not.
  • We understand soil conditions in Chh. Sambhajinagar - rocky or clay-heavy soils have specific challenges and we know what electrode types work best.
  • Chemical earthing is offered where conventional GI pipe earthing does not achieve adequate resistance - we do not pretend one type fits every site.
  • Written test report with readings - the document you need for factory inspection and insurance.

Common questions about this service

If your question is not here, WhatsApp us directly - we will give you a straight answer.

What is an acceptable earth resistance value under IS 3043?

IS 3043 specifies that the resistance of any earthing system should be as low as practical. For LT systems with combined neutral and earth (TN systems), the standard requires the combined fault loop impedance to be low enough that protection operates within the required time. As a practical guide, equipment earth resistance should be 1 ohm or less; for structural earthing, 5 ohms or less. The actual limit depends on the system configuration - we will discuss the specific target for your installation during the site assessment.

What is chemical earthing and when is it needed?

Chemical earthing uses a special electrode filled with a compound (usually graphite-based) that absorbs and retains moisture, reducing the contact resistance between the electrode and the surrounding soil. It is used in sites with rocky soil, high soil resistivity, or where the physical space for multiple conventional electrodes is limited. In parts of Chh. Sambhajinagar with laterite or rocky subsoil, chemical earthing is often the practical solution.

Our factory has had an earthing system for 10 years - do we need to test it again?

Yes. Earth-resistance values change over time as soil conditions change (moisture content, corrosion of electrode, soil disturbance from construction nearby). IS 3043 recommends periodic testing. A 10-year-old system that has never been tested could have resistance values far above what the installation was designed for. It costs relatively little to test; it costs a great deal to have a fault where the earthing system does not operate correctly.

Can poor earthing cause motor failures?

Yes. Ground loops from improper earthing cause stray currents that accelerate bearing failure in motors. Poor earthing also means that in a fault condition (winding insulation failure), the fault current does not flow cleanly to earth, causing the motor to run in a faulted state longer than it should before the protection trips.

Do you test earthing for residential buildings as well?

Yes. For housing societies, we test the earth electrode in the meter room and pump room. For individual homes, we test the house earth electrode. Residential earth-resistance testing is part of our inspection and safety audit service.
