Weathered outdoor CCTV cameras exposed to dust and rain - the kind of gradual degradation that a scheduled CCTV AMC visit catches before footage is lost

Here is a pattern we see on almost every service call in Chh. Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad): a shop or society calls us after an incident - a scooter scratched in the parking, a dispute at the gate, a theft - and asks us to pull the footage. We open the DVR and find the hard disk stopped recording three weeks ago. Or the camera that covered exactly that angle has been staring at the sky since a monsoon gust shifted it. Nobody noticed, because nobody looks at a CCTV system until they need it.

That is the whole case for a CCTV AMC. It is not a luxury add-on. It is scheduled servicing that makes sure the system is actually recording, actually visible at night, and actually reachable on your phone - on the one day it matters. This guide covers what a genuine CCTV AMC visit must include, the difference between comprehensive and non-comprehensive contracts, and honest per-camera pricing for this market.

How CCTV systems quietly fail within a year

A CCTV system rarely fails with a bang. It fades. These are the failure modes we find again and again on sites that have had no servicing since installation:

  • Dust and spider webs kill night vision. The IR LEDs around the lens attract insects, insects attract spiders, and a web across the lens reflects the IR light straight back into the camera. The result is a milky white blur at night - on a camera that looks perfectly fine in daylight. Add the dust that Waluj and Chikalthana industrial belts generate and six months is enough to cut night-time clarity in half.
  • Connectors corrode after monsoon. Outdoor BNC and RJ45 joints that were not properly weatherproofed take in moisture during the rains. The camera does not die immediately - it starts flickering, showing rolling lines, or dropping offline for a few minutes at a time. By Diwali the joint has corroded enough that the feed is gone.
  • Hard disks develop bad sectors. A DVR hard disk writes 24 hours a day, every day. Surveillance-rated or not, it wears. Bad sectors first cause gaps in the recording timeline, then the disk stops recording altogether while the live view still works - which is why nobody notices.
  • Cameras drift out of position. Wind, a ladder bumped during painting work, a pigeon that likes the housing - the camera that covered the gate now covers the compound wall. Unless someone compares the current view with the intended view, the drift goes unrecorded until footage is needed.
  • Remote access breaks silently. The ISP changes your router, the public IP changes, a firmware update resets the port forwarding, or the P2P cloud account lapses. The system keeps recording locally, but the owner who checks the app once a month finds it dead - usually while travelling, which is exactly when they wanted it.

None of these are manufacturing defects. They are maintenance items, and every one of them is caught by a routine service visit.

Comprehensive vs non-comprehensive AMC, in plain words

CCTV AMC contracts come in two flavours, and the price difference between them confuses people until the terms are spelled out:

  • Non-comprehensive (labour-only) AMC. The contract covers scheduled visits, cleaning, testing, configuration and repair labour. Parts - a failed camera, a new hard disk, a power supply - are billed separately at actual cost. This is the common choice locally and the cheaper one, because the vendor is not carrying parts risk.
  • Comprehensive AMC. Parts and labour are both included - if a camera fails, the vendor replaces it at no extra charge (usually excluding physical damage, theft and lightning). You pay more up front for predictable costs. This makes sense for larger deployments where a few failures per year are a statistical certainty.

Neither is wrong. A 4-camera home does not need comprehensive cover; a 32-camera factory with cameras on 8-metre poles probably does. The important thing is knowing which one you are signing, because a cheap quote is often cheap simply because it is labour-only - and that is fine, as long as you knew.

What CCTV AMC costs in Chh. Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad)

Per-camera pricing is the honest way to compare quotes. In this market, non-comprehensive CCTV AMC typically runs Rs 50 to Rs 100 per camera per month, depending on camera count (more cameras means a lower per-camera rate), system type (IP systems take more configuration time than analog HD) and how spread out the site is. An 8-camera office usually lands around Rs 5,000 to 8,000 per year.

Comprehensive AMC is normally priced as 8 to 12 percent of the system value per year. A Rs 60,000 installation would cost roughly Rs 5,000 to 7,000 per year with parts included. For national context: some large facility-management providers quote as low as Rs 42 to 62 per camera per month, but those rates assume hundreds of cameras across corporate sites - they are not a realistic benchmark for a 8- or 16-camera premises here.

Typical siteCamerasNon-comprehensive (per year)Comprehensive (per year)
Home / bungalow4Rs 2,500 - 4,500Rs 4,000 - 6,500
Office / showroom8Rs 5,000 - 8,000Rs 8,000 - 12,000
Housing society16Rs 9,000 - 15,000Rs 15,000 - 24,000
Factory / warehouse32Rs 18,000 - 30,000Rs 28,000 - 45,000

These figures are indicative, not a quotation. Actual pricing depends on a site survey - camera height (pole and gantry cameras need ladders or lifts), system age, cabling condition and how many visits per year you want. Treat any vendor who quotes a firm price without seeing the site with the same suspicion you would anywhere else.

Technician servicing a wall-mounted CCTV camera - lens cleaning, connector inspection and aim verification during a scheduled AMC visit
A real AMC visit is hands-on: every camera cleaned, every connector checked, every angle verified against the intended coverage.

The visit checklist a real CCTV AMC must include

A visit where someone glances at the monitor, sees 8 live tiles and leaves is not maintenance. A proper CCTV AMC visit works through a checklist:

  • Lens and housing cleaning - every camera, not just the reachable ones. Dust film, water spots and webs removed from the lens and the IR ring.
  • IR night vision check - cover the light sensor or test after dark on at least a sample of cameras. Day image quality says nothing about night performance.
  • Cable and connector inspection - outdoor runs especially. BNC/RJ45 joints opened where flicker or dropouts are reported, weatherproofing redone where it has perished.
  • DVR/NVR health and HDD status - check the disk SMART status or error log, verify the recording schedule is still correct, and confirm storage retention (if you expected 15 days of footage and the disk now holds 6, something changed).
  • Recording continuity check - scrub back through the timeline on every channel and confirm there are no gaps. This single check catches the silent-HDD-failure problem that ruins most footage requests.
  • Remote access re-verification - open the mobile app on site, confirm live view and playback both work from outside the local network, and fix port forwarding or P2P binding if the ISP changed anything.
  • Camera aim check - compare each camera's current view against the coverage it was installed for, and realign anything that has drifted.
  • Firmware and password hygiene - default passwords changed, firmware updated where stable updates exist, and old staff accounts removed. Unpatched DVRs with admin/admin logins are the most common way systems end up in botnets.

And every visit should end with a short written report: what was checked, what was found, what was fixed, what needs parts. The same documentation discipline we apply to electrical AMC visits for factories and commercial buildings applies here - a verbal "sab theek hai" is not a record.

Who needs a CCTV AMC most

  • Housing societies - gate and parking footage is the evidence in almost every society dispute, and society systems are usually the least maintained because responsibility is shared.
  • Shops and showrooms - billing counter and entry coverage protects against both theft and false claims.
  • Offices - especially those with server rooms or cash handling.
  • Factories and warehouses - in Waluj, Shendra and Chikalthana MIDC, cameras cover material gates and dispatch yards where a single disputed consignment can cost more than a decade of AMC fees. Dust loading in these belts also makes cleaning visits genuinely necessary, not cosmetic.
  • Schools and colleges - where working CCTV is increasingly a compliance expectation, not an option.

Worth knowing: government offices and public institutions procure CCTV maintenance through GeM (Government e-Marketplace), where CCTV AMC is a standard listed service category. If you manage a government facility, your route is a GeM bid rather than a direct contract - but the visit checklist above is exactly what you should write into the bid's scope of work.

Questions to ask any AMC vendor before signing

  • What is the response time for a breakdown call? A dead camera on your main gate should not wait for next month's scheduled visit. 24 to 48 hours is a reasonable commitment locally.
  • Do I get a written report per visit? With per-camera status, not just a signature on a visit slip.
  • What are the HDD replacement terms? Hard disks are the most likely part to fail. Under a comprehensive contract, is the disk included? Under labour-only, do you pay market rate or a marked-up rate?
  • Will you service a system installed by someone else? Some vendors only maintain what they sold. If your installer has vanished - a common story - you need someone willing to adopt the system as-is.
  • How many visits per year, and are emergency calls extra? Quarterly is the sensible minimum for outdoor systems in this climate; confirm whether breakdown visits between scheduled ones are included or chargeable.

Where we fit in

We install CCTV systems, and we also maintain systems installed by others - that second part matters, because a large share of our AMC clients came to us after their original installer stopped answering calls. If your premises already has an electrical AMC with us, CCTV maintenance can be folded into the same contract so one scheduled visit covers both - one vendor, one report, one phone number when something breaks.

For homes planning a first installation, the Marathi guide on home CCTV camera installation covers camera selection and installation cost. We handle CCTV work across CIDCO, Waluj, Chikalthana and surrounding areas - details and quote requests are on the CCTV installation and AMC service page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CCTV AMC worth it for just 4 cameras at home?

At Rs 2,500 to 4,500 per year, it is roughly the cost of one standalone service call - except the problems get caught on schedule instead of after an incident. If you are disciplined about checking playback and cleaning lenses yourself twice a year, you can skip it. Most people are not, which is why most 4-camera home systems we see have at least one dead or blind camera.

My installer disappeared. Can someone else take over maintenance?

Yes. A competent CCTV service provider can adopt a system installed by anyone - the first visit is a full audit (passwords recovered or reset, cabling mapped, HDD health checked) and from there it is maintained like any other system. We do this regularly; ask the vendor explicitly before signing, because some only service their own installations.

How often should the DVR hard disk be replaced?

A surveillance-rated disk writing continuously typically lasts 3 to 4 years; ordinary desktop disks often less. Do not wait for outright failure - once SMART errors or recording gaps appear, replace it. Under a non-comprehensive AMC you pay for the disk itself (roughly Rs 3,000 to 5,500 for 1-2 TB surveillance-grade), with replacement labour covered by the contract.

Does an AMC include shifting or adding cameras?

Normally no. AMC covers maintaining the existing system; adding cameras, shifting mounts or re-cabling is new work quoted separately. A good vendor will fold small adjustments into a scheduled visit at nominal cost, but a 4-camera addition is an installation job, not a maintenance item.
